Programs and Classes
Our preschool programs provide a classroom environment where children are encouraged to explore and are challenged to learn. From our classroom teachers to our dedicated art, music and physical education instructors, the St. Paul’s staff is committed to providing a well-rounded introductory education experience for all students. Your preschooler will make new friends and develop self-confidence as he or she strengthens cognitive skills. Our stimulating classroom environment allows children to grow and flourish - while having fun! Children have the opportunity to explore, discover and create in our dedicated Science Room and Art Room. They also take advantage of our indoor playground and large, age-appropriate outdoor playground, complete with outdoor eating area where older children can enjoy lunch when the weather permits.
Our low teacher-to-student ratios allow teachers to focus on the individual learning styles and needs of each child.
In all of its classes, SPDS is proud to maintain a student to teacher ratio below the Connecticut State mandate.
Beginnings and 2-Year-Old Program
Our Beginnings and 2-Year-Old programs are specifically designed for our youngest students. We focus on adjusting to separation from parents/caregivers, using language to express wants and needs, cooperative play with peers and building the fundamentals of early education. Classes are held in a newly renovated area designed specifically for this age group, where they enjoy free play, crafts, music, art and playground time. Students enjoy snack during their class, but lunch is not available. Potty-training is not required for this program. In both our Beginnings and 2-Year-Old program, the maximum class size is 8 children, with one head teacher and one or two assistant teachers in each classroom.
Our Beginnings program is intended for our very youngest preschoolers who turn 2 years old between August 1 and December 31 of the school year. We have one Beginnings class, which takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.
Our 2-Year-Old program is for children who turn 2 before the school year begins (between January 1 and July 31). There are two 2-Year-Old classes, offered two mornings a week (M/W or Tu/Th) from 9:00 am - 12 pm. Parents have the option to enroll in Friday morning class on a first come, first served basis. The optional Friday morning class is only open to those in the 2-Year-Old program.
Our 3-Year-Old program is designed for children who turn 3 between January 1 and December 31. We focus on increased ease of separation from parents/caregivers, improving self-sufficiency, strengthening fine-motor skills, more in-depth focus on colors, shapes, numbers, letters and developing a greater awareness of the larger community (i.e. field trips and enrichment visits from career professionals such as dentists, veterinarians, etc). With experienced teachers, our students learn to explore the world around them. Included in their daily activities are snack, music, gym, art and playground time.
Our 3-year-olds meet three or five mornings a week, 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. You may choose to extend your child’s day with an optional 1-hour lunch, available daily from noon - 1:00 pm. We also offer optional 1-hour enrichment programs 4 days/week following lunch from 1:00 - 2:00 pm (please see below for more details). We offer one 3 day/week class which meets on M/W/F and two 5 day/week classes. In the 3-Year-Old program, the average class size is 12-14 children, with one head teacher and one or two assistant teachers in each classroom.
Our 4-Year-Old program is designed for children who turn 4 between January 1- December 31. We focus on the tools and skills necessary to prepare children for Kindergarten. This includes developing a greater sense of independence and self-sufficiency, encouraging basic decision-making without adult intervention, problem- solving, improving listening skills, proficiency in letters and single-digit numbers and an introduction to writing. Our 4-Year-Old program exposes our children to the larger community with field trips and enrichment visitors in the classroom (i.e. - dentist, veterinarian, African drummers, foreign language speakers within our SPDS community, etc.). Included in their daily activities are snack, music, gym, art and playground time.
Our 4-year-olds meet five mornings a week, 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. You may choose to extend your child’s day with an optional 1-hour lunch, available daily from noon -1:00 pm. In the 4-Year-Old program, the average class size is 14-16 children with one head teacher and one assistant teacher in each classroom.
Be4K Connecting Program
Our Be4K connecting program is designed for children who will turn 5 between September 1 and December 31. These children have completed the 4-year-old program and are technically eligible to enter Kindergarten, but would benefit from continued social, behavioral and developmental instruction in a pre-K environment.
Be4K is a robust bridge program incorporating skill-building, multiple science units, exploration and understanding of nature and the environment, “Everyday Math”, “Handwriting without Tears”, introduction to Spanish, as well as art, music and gym. We focus on encouraging increased confidence, peer interaction and self-reliance as we prepare our students for a successful Kindergarten experience. We also encourage problem-solving and increased socialization through free play.
Our Be4K class meets five days a week, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Your child will enjoy lunch with their Be4K classmates daily as a part of the program. On nice days, lunch will be outside at the picnic tables on our large, newly expanded playground.
